A podiatrist is trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot and it's related structures. Podiatrists are uniquely qualified among medical professionals to treat the foot and ankle, based on their education, training and experience.

A podiatrist requires at least an undergraduate university degree followed by a four year program at a college of podiactric medicine, covering areas of study such as surgery, sports medicine, biomechanics, geriatrics, pediatrics, orthopaedics, dermatology and primary care.
